‘Broad Street Circa 1919’ exhibit on display at Library of Virginia
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A new exhibit, "Broad Street Circa 1919: Exploring Richmond's Architectural Heritage through Photographs," is on display at the Library of Virginia through May 30.
The exhibit will be on display at the Library of Virginia through Saturday, May 30, featuring historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by Danville native G.L. Hall -- a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street.
"Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era," the library agency wrote in the March 23 press release.
Officials said the exhibit highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the collections, per a release.
The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation following World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic. The library agency emphasized that the city experienced social shifts, economic development and more.
According to the Library of Virginia's website, Hall began his career as a bookkeeper before founding the G.L. Hall Optical Company in Norfolk in 1901, before expanding to the Richmond area in 1910.
