Petersburg asked to limit water use due to ‘unexpected system malfunction’

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Petersburg residents and businesses are being asked to use as little water as possible due to an "unexpected system malfunction" late Friday night.

Just after 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, Petersburg officials said that it needs all city residents and businesses to conserve water "until further notice" due to an "unexpected system malfunction."

"Please use water only for essential needs while our crews work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible," a city spokesperson said.

In the comments of a city Facebook post about this incident, someone asked if Petersburg's water is still safe to drink. The city Facebook account answered "Yes."

No additional information, such as the nature of this "system malfunction," has been shared by the city as of the time of reporting.

"We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this time," the spokesperson said, adding that updates will be shared when possible.
