Petersburg firefighters battle commercial fire on hot summer day

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Petersburg firefighters battled both a commercial fire and the summer heat Tuesday afternoon.

The afternoon of Tuesday, July 8, crews with Petersburg Fire Rescue & Emergency Services were called to a large manufacturing facility on North Normandy Drive for report of a commercial fire.

"It wasn’t the most intense fire we’ve ever faced, but throw in the 98-degree heat and all the materials sitting below that roof, and it made for a tough, smart firefight," fire officials said. "Didn’t slow our people down one bit."

Fire crews from Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County and Colonial Heights, as well as the Crater Hazmat Team, provided support during the response. Officials said Chesterfield's rebab and support units "kept [Petersburg] crews standing when the heat was doing its best to take them out."

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

"Everyone went home, no injuries, fire’s out. That’s how it’s supposed to be," fire officials said. "Proud of every single firefighter and officer out there today. That’s Petersburg pride. Strong work all around."
