Petersburg National Battlefield trails majorly damaged by flooding

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Recent severe flooding did major damage to trails at Petersburg National Battlefield. As these trails are now unsafe to use, the National Park Service (NPS) has implemented multiple closures.

Central Virginia is enduring a period of severe storms and heavy downpours, which have caused flooding across the region.

The morning of Tuesday, July 15, NPS announced that recent flooding caused major damage to a road and multiple trails at the Petersburg National Battlefield.

Petersburg National Battlefield is a historic site related to the Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War. It is located near Petersburg and its acres span multiple localities, including Prince George and Dinwiddie counties, as well as the city of Hopewell.

Petersburg and its surrounding localities were among those hit especially hard by floods on Monday, July 14.
