Petersburg’s comfort station opens for winter months

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Petersburg has opened its comfort station as the winter months approach and temperatures drop.

The announcement comes just in time as the first snow of the season is expected to fall across Central Virginia on Friday, Dec. 5. The comfort station will be located at the Transit Station at 100 West Washington Street in Petersburg.

The comfort station will be open to residents Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The city also adds that "the transit center is warm, and restroom facilities and water are available."

Food and pets will not be allowed in the station with the exception of service animals.

Doors to enter the transit station will be open at the Greyhound entrance, however, the Union Street and main Washington Street doors will be closed.

According to a press release, "City residents can ride the bus to the Transit Center for free, relax and stay warm, then return home on the bus."

Those visiting the station are asked to wear a mask if they are not feeling well. Petersburg also asks that residents check on their neighbors, especially senior citizens and those with health issues, during the cold weather.
