The fire department said vehicle fires can spread quickly, produce toxic smoke and create explosion hazards.
They shared the following tips to ensure drivers know how to react:
- If you see or smell smoke, notice flames or suspect your vehicle is on fire, pull over as soon as it is safe, turn off the engine, get everyone out, move at least 100 feet away from the vehicle and traffic, and call 911.
- Do not attempt to open the hood or trunk, and do not return to the vehicle for personal items.
This fire came less than an hour after Prince George Fire and EMS crews responded to the 5100 block of County Drive for a reported structure fire.
When they arrived, firefighters found smoke and fire blazing from two sheds as well as a nearby brush fire.
