PHOTOS: Nearly $150,000 raised for suicide prevention at Out of the Darkness Walk
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- More than 1,000 people walked in Richmond on Saturday morning, raising nearly $150,000 for suicide prevention.
The 16th annual Out of the Darkness Walk was held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, and the walk began at 9:30 a.m., with participants walking along Vita Trail in Byrd Park. The event was also emceed by Showcase Host Melissa Chase.
More than 1,000 people walked and raised over $147,000 for suicide prevention, nearing the goal of $200,000.
Walkers also learned about life-saving resources, remembered loved ones and shared personal stories of survival.
The walks are held by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), which is a voluntary health organization dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.

Additional walks will be held in Charles City County, Newport News, Suffolk, Lynchburg, Fairfax County, the town of Stephens City in Frederick County, the town of Dublin in Pulaski County, Fredericksburg, Galax, the town of Farmville in Prince Edward County and Staunton.
