RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department held a memorial service meant to honor fallen officers on Thursday morning.

The Police Memorial Service took place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, at the Richmond Police Training Academy, located at 1202 W. Graham Road.

Each year during National Police Week, which runs from Sunday, May 11, to Saturday, May 17 this year, law enforcement agencies across the U.S. honor those who died in the line of duty.

The week includes chances of remembrance and honor, while also providing law enforcement, survivors and the public a chance to celebrate fallen officers.

"The members of the Richmond Police Department are selflessly devoted to the residents of Richmond and public safety, whereas the Richmond Police Department and its officers recognize their duty to serve the people of the city by safeguarding life and property, protecting the people against violence and disorder, protecting the innocence against deception and the beak against oppression," said a spokesperson with Richmond Mayor Danny Avula.

Family members attended to lay a wreath at the memorial stone.
