Plaques unveiled in Chesterfield honoring past and present sheriffs

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A ceremony took place in Chesterfield County this week that unveiled several plaques honoring past and present sheriffs who have served the community.

According to the county's website, community members and staff joined together on Thursday, April 3 at the historic 1917 Courthouse as two plaques were displayed listing over 60 names.

With the first sheriff being appointed in 1749, the county states that there have been 64 sheriffs appointed throughout the office's 276-year history -- including current Sheriff Karl Leonard.

Leonard was in attendance on Thursday alongside several other county figures such as County Administrator Joe Casey and multiple members of the Board of Supervisors.

The plaques will be displayed permanently within the entrance of the courthouse, offering residents the opportunity to learn more about those that have held the position.
