Pocahontas State Park to host resolution hikes in January

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Is your New Year's resolution to go outdoors more and get active? Pocahontas State Park is hosting hikes throughout January to help folks build stamina. Hikes throughout the month get progressively longer. Attendees should wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. The following "resolution route" hikes will be held in the park: Big Poplar hike on Jan. 1: The route is a 0.7-mile loop with some elevation change and exposed routes. Attendees will see some of the oldest and largest trees at the park. The group will meet at the Visitor Center before the hike. Forest Exploration hike on Jan. 11: The hike spans over 2.3 miles. Attendees will meet at the Swift Creek Boat Launch. Beaver Lake and Ground Pine on Jan. 18: The route is 2.9 miles with elevation change and exposed routes. It meanders around Beaver Lake, the park's most popular scenic area. The group will meet at the Visitor Center. Co-op and Troopers Tribute on Jan. 25: The hike is a 3.6-mile loop along Swift Creek Lake with ample elevation change, exposed roots and beaver chews.
