Police asking for information, video of crash involving Richmond principal

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department is asking the public for information or videos of a crash where a Richmond principal was hit by a car while riding his bicycle on Patterson Avenue on Tuesday.

On Thursday, March 13, the Richmond Police Department said detectives with the department's crash team are asking for information or video from the scene on Tuesday, March 11, where Mary Munford Elementary School's principal Gregory Muzik was hit by a car while riding his bicycle on Patterson Avenue.

At around 4:38 p.m. on Tuesday, Richmond Police officers were called to a crash in the 4400 block of Patterson Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man -- later identified as Muzik -- down and injured after the bicycle he was riding was rear-ended by a vehicle.

Police said Muzik was taken to a local hospital with injuries that remain life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle reportedly remained on the scene.

According to officials, at that location on Patterson Avenue, there is a parking lane between the travel lane and the dedicated bicycle lane near the curb.

Crash Team investigators determined Muzik was riding westbound in the parking lane when the crash occurred. Investigators have also determined that the speed of the vehicle or impairment of the driver were not factors in the crash.

Police said charges have not been placed in connection to the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information or doorbell video of this incident is asked to contact Richmond Police Department Crash Team Investigator G. Drago at 804-646-1369.
