Prince Edward animal shelter quarantines after kennel cough case

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Prince Edward County Animal Control recently announced that its shelter is under a two-week quarantine due to kennel cough.

According to a post from the shelter, the quarantine began on Tuesday, April 1, after a confirmed case of what they described as a "highly contagious canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC)" -- also known as kennel cough.

All animals that are currently at the shelter will be monitored and treated for symptoms as necessary, according to the shelter, and they will not accept or release animals throughout the quarantine. Additionally, no visitors or volunteers are allowed to enter the shelter.

An announcement will be made to the public when the quarantine is lifted as well as when animals are available for adoption and when stray dogs can be picked up.
