Retired K-9 with Hanover Sheriff Office dies after battle with cancer
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A retired K-9 with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office died last week following a short battle with cancer.
The sheriff's office took to social media to announce the passing of K-9 Scout on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Scout was a 10-year-old bloodhound who "faithfully served" the county for six years, the post said.
"Known for her incredible tracking abilities, Scout played a vital role in numerous searches and investigations, helping reunite families and protect our community," said the sheriff's office.
After she retired in 2021 due to hip dysplasia, Scout spent her time with her partner and handler, Sgt. Mahler.

Scout was surrounded by the people who loved her most, Sgt. Mahler and his family, in her final moments last week, the post said.
"We are grateful for Scout's loyal service to Hanover County. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and the many missions she helped complete," the post read.
