Richmond community mourns beloved VCU Dining greeter ‘Miss Peaches’
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) community is mourning after the death of Jackie "Miss Peaches" Cherry, who served as a greeter at the university's Shafer Dining Hall.
VCU Dining announced Cherry's passing in a social media post on Wednesday, March 11. She was 61 years old, according to her obituary.
Cherry, a Fauquier County native, was a food service worker with VCU Dining for 16 years -- but her impact reached far beyond just helping students and staff get a bite to eat.
"Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to a true VCU icon, Miss Peaches," the post said, in part. "She was the warm light at the top of the Shafer stairs and a constant source of encouragement to everyone she met."

On Wednesday, the university thanked Cherry for her signature "peachy attitude" and kindness over the years.
Following Cherry's death, her family created a GoFundMe to help cover the unexpected costs of a funeral and memorial services.
"Jackie was a beloved family member and friend whose kindness, generosity and spirit touched the lives of so many people," the GoFundMe said, in part.
