Richmond homeowners in need of critical repairs can request city’s help

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmonders who need critical repairs done in their homes can request the city's help through its home rehabilitation program.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, Richmond's Department of Housing and Community Development announced that it is accepting applications for its "Healthy Homes" Home Rehabilitation Program.

“We cannot rely on development alone to address our City’s housing crisis,” said Mayor Danny Avula in a press release. “Preserving the housing we already have and working to keep homeowners in their homes is an equally important part of the equation."

Eligible health and safety repairs that can be covered under "Healthy Homes" include, but are not limited to:

  • HVAC repairs or replacements
  • Roof repairs or replacements
  • Plumbing and electrical repairs
  • Energy efficiency improvements

The city can also help make homes more accessible. For example, residents can request that their bathrooms be modified to be ADA-compliant.

Since it was created in 2023, this program has helped nearly 100 homeowners make critical repairs to their homes, with the combined cost of these repairs exceeding $2 million, the city said.

“This program is not just about repairs,” said director of Housing and Community Development Merrick Malone, in the release. “It is about stability, dignity and the preservation of homeownership, allowing longtime residents to safely and reliably age in place. This is an essential piece to a sustainable housing supply that works to the benefit of all residents."

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. They will continue to be accepted until all current available funding has been spent.
