Richmond Kickers collaborate with the Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge in support of breast cancer awareness

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- This past weekend the Richmond Kickers collaborated with non profit organization, Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge (PLSC) to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.

PLSC was started back in 2018 by seven-year-old Brynne Rhodes to honor her mother Kim Rhodes who at the time was undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Her duaghter decided to open a lemonade stand turned pink to honor her mother and donated the money to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The collab event was held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m., and according to mother Kim Rhodes, the Richmond Kickers are the first professional soccer team in the U.S. to partner with the campaign.

8News caught up with event Volunteer Director of Virginia for the Pink Lemonade Challenge, Yolanda Johnson.

"We come out and we encourage people to spread breast cancer awareness by setting up stands or donating, making posters and sending them to us," said Johnson.

According to Johnson, this is not the first sporting event the organization has been to, "We've been to the Steelers, we've been to other football crucial catch games, so we just want to encourage people to come out and spread breast cancer [awareness]."

The non-profit organization is currently located in 47 states, and is looking to expand in all 50 states across the country.

"We want to be the end to breast cancer. So the Breast Cancer Research Foundation receives 100% of any donations, so they are doing research nationwide to end breast cancer, so that is our main thing we want to end breast cancer," shared Johnson.

She added that breast cancer effects everyone and not just women but men as well, "we want our children to grow up and learn how to prevent breast cancer..."
