Richmond kicks off annual Festival of India

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Hundreds gather to celebrate food, culture and music at the annual Festival of India at the Richmond Convention Center.

The festival is set to take place from Saturday Sept. 13 to Sunday Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

"Enjoy the beauty of Indian festivals, culture, authentic food, jewelry, clothing, dance and music," reads this years flyer.

The festival first got its start in Richmond in 1981 by Dr. M.G. Kurup the "first India Bazar" sponsored by the Hindu Center of Virginia, was attended by approximately 1500 people, according to the festivals website.

Cultural dances are also performed at the festival such as Bollywood and Bhangra, according to the festival's website.

Festivities also include Eastern and Western fusion music as well as a variety of cuisines such as dosa, kachori, samosas, tandoori chicken and sweets. Crafts like henna and face painting were also available to attendees.
