Richmond Police identify persons of interest in ongoing deadly assault investigation

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Detectives with the Richmond Police Department have found three persons of interest who were sought in connection to the deadly assault of a 26-year-old man that occurred in Scott's Addition two weekends prior. Around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, officers were called to the intersection of West Marshall and North Sheppard streets for a reported aggravated assault. Upon their arrival, they found 26-year-old Jacob Baldwin, of Chesterfield County, with a life-threatening injury to his head. Four days later, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, authorities reported Baldwin had died in a local hospital. Police said the suspect in the assault, identified as 27-year-old Nico Rivera of Mechanicsville, reportedly surrendered himself at the Richmond Police Department Headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 19. According to police, he was charged with second-degree murder. Despite the suspect turning himself in, police said they were still looking for three persons of interest in connection to the assault. Police told 8News they were looking for two women and one man during a vigil for Baldwin held on Friday morning. "Detectives sought to identify these individuals so they could share with investigators possible information about the incident," a release from the Richmond Police Department reads. "Detectives do not consider them suspects and are not looking for other suspects in this investigation at this time." On Monday, Oct. 21, police reported that all three persons of interest had been identified and contacted by detectives.
