Richmond to celebrate National Public Works Week with events, award ceremony

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond's Department of Public Works (DPW) is celebrating National Public Works Week with events and an award ceremony.

The week is celebrated from Monday, May 19, through Friday, May 23. A spokesperson for the city said highlights of the week include a proclamation recognizing the week and a literature display at the lobby of City Hall.

The display will be on view daily -- from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- through Friday, May 23.

In addition, the city said a DPW Touch-A-Truck event will be hosted on Wednesday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Main Street Station.

Elementary school students were reportedly invited to get hands-on experience with DPW vehicles, meet the teams behind them and learn how public works impacts their lives.

The spokesperson said a private award ceremony and luncheon for DPW employees will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 22.

Other events include a Speed Management Symposium open to the public from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Main Street Station, where folks will watch presentations from city leaders about Vision Zero, Richmond Connects, roadway safety projects and more.

Attendees at the symposium can also learn from a variety of city departments and non-profits, and ask questions during a Q-and-A session. Dinner will be provided, according to the city. To RSVP, visit the city's website.

Rounding out the week will be free live music at Main Street Station, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the station's patio.
