Richmond water system continues to work as it should going into wintry weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The city of Richmond said its water treatment plant is online and functioning going into a weekend of expected winter weather. In a press release on Friday, Jan. 17, city officials provided an update on Richmond's water system, which is currently under significant scrutiny following a six-day water crisis. That same crisis was caused by a winter storm. According to the city, Richmond's water treatment plant is working as it should, with its reservoir sitting above its target height. A new finished water pump -- or a pump for water that's ready for distribution -- is up and running as of Thursday, Jan. 16. It replaces the finished water pump that failed overnight earlier in the week. Officials added that a new backup battery was also installed on Thursday. "Meanwhile, enhanced protocols to protect operational continuity at the water plant that were implemented ahead of last week’s snowstorm remain in effect," the city said. City officials also shared some new information about relief for people impacted by the water crisis. According to the city, an existing relief fund and fiscal partner were identified. This fund will begin to accept donations next week, with more details to come "after the fund's criteria and application process are solidified." Finally, officials shared that Mayor Danny Avula will be in Washington, D.C. this weekend for the 93rd Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. According to the city, while there, Avula will speak with other municipal leaders about their experiences with public utilities. "Mayor Danny Avula remains in regular contact with key members of the City’s leadership team as well as operations staff at the water plant," the city said. "He is prepared to promptly return to Richmond if necessary."
