Safety cameras at Jahnke Road relocated to Cary Street Road in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Two of Richmond's safety cameras will now monitor traffic on Cary Street Road instead of the previously planned Jahnke Road section.

Richmond officials on Wednesday, Feb. 18, said two safety cameras in the 1200 block of Jahnke Road were relocated to the 4400 block of Cary Street Road behind Mary Munford Elementary School. The cameras were previously located in front of Westover Hills Elementary School.

Officials said the relocation shifted the focus from an area with fewer speeding violations to an area "identified as a higher priority for traffic safety." The move also factored in heavy vehicle volume on Cary Street Road and an upcoming project that's expected to reduce vehicle speeds on Jahnke Road, per a release.

"More than 18,000 vehicles travel past the Mary Munford Elementary School campus on Cary Street Road each day, making it critical for drivers to slow down along this busy corridor, particularly during student arrival and dismissal times,” said Capt. Anthony Jackson with the Richmond Police Department.

Mary Munford Elementary School is now the only school in the program with two sets of safety cameras. The first set was installed in the 4500 block of Grove Avenue in front of the school, officials said.

Authorities said depending on future data, the safety cameras might be moved again to areas with a higher safety priority.

The cameras on Cary Street Road will now operate between 7:15 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. and between 2:15 p.m and 4:15 p.m. on days when school is in session.

The safety cameras are located at 13 schools, including:

• Huguenot High School, 7900 block of Forest Hill Avenue
• Linwood Holton Elementary, 1600 block of Laburnum Avenue
• Lucille Brown Middle School, 6300 block of Jahnke Road
• Mary Munford Elementary School, 4400 block of Cary Street Road
• Mary Munford Elementary School, 4500 block of Grove Avenue
• McClenney Elementary School, 3800 block of Chamberlayne Avenue
• MLK, Jr. Middle School, 1000 block of Mosby Street
• Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts, 3400 block of Semmes Avenue
• Richmond High School for the Arts, 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike
• River City Middle School, 6300 block of Hull Street Road
• Swansboro Elementary School, 3100 block of Midlothian Turnpike
• Thomas Boushall Middle School, 3400 block of Hopkins Road
• Thomas Jefferson High School, 1300 block of Malvern Avenue
