Shooting at New Kent emergency room prompts investigation

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A shooting at a New Kent County emergency room is being investigated by New Kent County authorities Friday evening.

As of about 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, deputies with the New Kent County Sheriff's Office are on scene at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health New Kent Emergency Center, where they are investigating a "shooting incident" that took place on the property.

Details are very limited at this time. Authorities stressed that there is no active threat to the public and no suspects are being actively sought.

"The safety of our residents, medical staff, and visitors remains our top priority," the sheriff's office said. "We are in close coordination with VCU Health officials to ensure the continued safety of the facility and surrounding area."
