Start 2026 with a ‘First Day Hike’ at Virginia State Parks

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- If your New Year's resolution is to start or stay more active, then why not kick off 2026 by doing a "First Day Hike" at a Virginia State Park?

Virginia State Parks employees are inviting people to start the new year by hiking one of Virginia's 44 state parks.

The "First Day Hike" is an initiative from the America's State Parks association, where hikers across the country are encouraged to start the new year in nature.

The start of the new year is also the perfect time to begin the Virginia State Park's "Trail Quest." A challenge for true nature lovers in Virginia that rewards hikers for visiting all the state parks in Virginia.

There are a total of 44 Virginia state parks, with 41 offering the Trail Quest Program. Participants of the challenge will receive a pin after visiting five, 10, 20, 30 and all 41 parks. When the quest is completed, you will earn the title of "Master Hiker."

Something new the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will be offering this year are a few guided hikes. The Virginia Natural Heritage Program will be providing these hikes in natural preserve areas during select times.
