StormTracker 8: Mild with a few spotty showers this evening
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Another mild day will be with us for the final day of 2024 with highs near the middle 60s. I would enjoy it if I were you because much cooler air moves in for the New Year. Today we will see partly cloudy skies and highs will be in the low to middle 60s. Spotty showers will move in this evening. Not all of us will see showers, but all of us have the risk and the best timing to see any showers is from 5pm - 10pm. Showers look to be out of the area for the ball drop with temperatures near 50 at midnight. Our skies clear overnight and lows will drop down into the low to middle 40s. It will be cooler tomorrow for New Year's Day with highs near the middle 50s under mostly sunny skies. It will also be breezy with gusts up to 30mph. Even cooler temperatures (back to seasonable) will move in for the end of the week with highs in the middle to upper 40s. Friday a weak system moves in that could bring us a few spotty sprinkles and flurries, but this system is looking mostly dry. Looking ahead to the weekend it will be even chillier with highs struggling to get out of the 30s on Saturday. High temperatures Sunday will top out near 40 under partly cloudy skies. All eyes are on a more robust system approaching the area by the end of the weekend. Our weather models aren't in full agreement with timing. The European model has the system moving in Sunday night into Monday while our American model doesn't have the system moving in until Monday. All the wintry weather types remain a potential right now—the details will shake out over the next few days. Looking beyond our 8 day forecast arctic air looks to move in and stay for quite some time. This could plunge much of the east down into “pipe popper” temperatures.
