StormTracker 8: VIPIR Alert – Snow to sleet and then rain by evening
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Snow will develop this morning and become steady at times as we head into the afternoon. During the mid to late afternoon that snow will mix with sleet south of Petersburg and unfortunately for you snow lovers that sleet will work its way northward into Metro Richmond by this evening. It could be a very nasty evening commute across Central Virginia with quite a bit of snow on the ground and sleet mixing in making for some very tricky travel. The latter part of this evening into the early part of tonight that snow sleet mixture will change over to rain for Metro Richmond and all areas to the south. It does look like areas north of Doswell will remain all snow for this system with a little bit of sleet mixing on in.
Snowfall accumulations will range from 1 to 3 inches south of Petersburg into and through Dinwiddie County and west into Nottoway and Lunenburg County as well as Prince George County.
3” to 6” inches will fall across the heart of Metro Richmond and that extends to the west into Powhatan, Goochland, Amelia and even Prince Edward County as well as Cumberland and Buckingham County also included in that will be New Kent, Charles City County and points east into the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
For areas to the north of Doswell you will stay with all snow with a little bit of sleet mixing in later this evening and tonight and your accumulations could range from 6 to 9 in.
This weather system will exit early Wednesday morning, and we will start your Wednesday off with cloudy skies and a few rain showers. Wednesday will be a rainy day but it's chilly day with highs only around 40.
More rain is likely for Wednesday night into Thursday is temperatures rise out of the 40s to near 50 by Thursday afternoon.
Partly sunny skies will return for Friday which is Valentine's Day with highs in the middle 40s.
Our next weather system will move in during Saturday providing rain for Central Virginia once again with highs in the middle 40s. That rain could continue for Saturday night and exit early Sunday with maybe some late day breaks of sun Sunday. Our high temperatures on Sunday will top out in the middle fifties.
Looking ahead to the early part of next week we will have partly sunny skies for Monday and Tuesday with highs in the lower 40s.
