StormTracker8: Winter storm to arrive this afternoon bringing snow & ice

Richmond, Va. (WRIC) -- We have the latest details on this weekend's winter storm. VIPIR Alerts are in place today, tomorrow and Monday.

Starting in the early evening today, snow is expected to begin. All of us here in Central Virginia will be receiving snow.

During the overnight into the morning hours on Sunday, we will see a transition from snow to sleet. The folks closer to the VA/NC line will see this transition first and the trend will continue north.

Later Sunday morning, we will see another transition from sleet to freezing rain. There are times we could be seeing multiple types of precipitation at the same time.

Freezing rain will continue throughout the day on Sunday. The ice accumulation we could see will be detrimental. It only takes 1/4 inch of ice accumulation to cause power interruptions, and 1/2 inch of ice accumulation can cause widespread power outages for days.

Our confidence is increasing that there is the potential for closer to 3/4 inch of ice accumulation in some areas. However, receiving more sleet could mean that we may see fewer power outage issues.

At the tail end of the system, there is a chance to see some rain that could impact snow totals for Eastern VA.

Sunday overnight into Monday, the freezing rain will wrap. Skies will begin to clear during the day on Monday, but we will experience dangerous conditions.

Roads and surfaces will be covered in ice and temperatures will not climb above freezing for days. Our lows will be frigid and plunge down into the teens some nights. We will be dealing with these conditions the entire week following the storm. Please stay safe and stay home if you are able.
