Teen charged in connection to stabbing at Henrico High School to undergo psych evaluation
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The teen charged in connection to a stabbing at Henrico High School last year appeared in court on Tuesday, July 22.
17-year-old Daniel Singletary is accused of stabbing a fellow student in December of last year and is facing one count of malicious assault. The judge has ordered him to undergo a sanity evaluation, however, other tests already performed are shedding light on what led up to the incident.
Singletary’s attorney, Kevin Purnell, said previous tests found Singletary has autism and other mental health conditions. Court records stated Singletary was not able to be evaluated for sanity at the time of the alleged offense, but did not share why.
Singletary has been in jail since December 4, 2024, when the Henrico County Police Division responded to the high school for an altercation between two students. According to officials, the school resource officer was on the scene immediately following the call and discovered the two male students.
The student Singletary is accused of stabbing was transported to an area hospital for life-threatening injuries at the time. 8News has asked the school division about that student's condition, to which they responded they cannot share information about a student's health.
Singletary was originally facing two charges including malicious assault and stabbing. The stabbing charge was dropped on May 19.
The Commonwealth's Attorney said because of the nature of his charge, Singletary is being tried as an adult in Henrico Circuit Court.
During the hearing, attorneys said it takes 60 to 90 days for a psych evaluation. Singletary will next be in court in October and the evaluation should be completed by then.
