Three-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee to headline RVA Sports Awards
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A three-time Olympic gold medalist that the Richmond Region Tourism Foundation describes as one of the greatest female athletes in modern history will headline the 4th-annual RVA Sports Awards in February. The RVA Sports Awards -- presented by Rosie's Gaming Emporium and Colonial Downs -- is an annual award ceremony meant to celebrate top-performing Richmond-area athletes. The next award show is scheduled for Feb. 8, 2025 and will be held at the Altria Theater. Jackie Joyner-Kersee, a four-time Olympian whose long jumping prowess earned her three gold medals, will headline the 2025 RVA Sports Awards, according to the foundation. In addition to those top medals, Joyner-Kersee also holds a silver and a bronze Olympic medal, as well as four World Outdoor Championships gold medals. According to the foundation, her world record of 7,291 points in the women's heptathlon has yet to be beaten -- and her 1994 Olympic long jump performance remains the second-longest in history. “Throughout her career and life, Jackie has broken records and barriers, while creating opportunities for more young people to get involved in sports," said Danielle Fitz-Hugh, vice president of community relations at the Richmond Region Tourism Foundation. "She shows us how powerful sports can be and the positive impacts it can make on our communities." Nominations for the 2025 RVA Sports Awards close on Dec. 10 and finalists will be announced on Dec. 15. After that, public voting will be open until Jan. 15. If you would like to attend the award show, tickets start at $75, with VIP tickets that include access to a red carpet reception being $125. "Organizers encourage guests to wear sneakers as part of the event’s 'sneaker ball' attire theme," the foundation said.
