Trial date for man accused of stabbing student at Henrico High set for March

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The person charged in connection to a stabbing at Henrico High School appeared in court on Tuesday, Oct. 21, for the last time before his trial in March 2026.
Daniel Singletary is accused of stabbing a fellow student on Dec. 4, 2024, and is facing one count of malicious assault.
Since his last hearing in July, Singletary has undergone a court-ordered sanity evaluation.
Singletary has already gone through tests finding he has autism and other mental health conditions. And while the results of the sanity evaluation are not public record, a one-day jury trial date was set for March 3, meaning he is competent enough for it.
Court documents show Dr. Michele Killough Nelson with Forensic Psychology Associates interviewed Singletary for an hour and fifteen minutes.
He turned 18 on Oct. 19, meaning some things in his case are changing since he is no longer a minor. Because of the nature of his charge, Singletary was always being tried as an adult.
Changes made to his case include no longer having a guardian ad litem (GAL). A GAL is a court-appointed attorney who represents the best interest of a child in legal cases, but because Singletary is now 18, he no longer has one.
Singletary is being held at the James River Juvenile Detention Center until the trial.
Singletary has been in jail since Dec. 4, 2024, when the Henrico County Police Division responded to the high school for an altercation between two students.
According to officials, the school resource officer was on the scene immediately following the call and discovered the two male students.
The student Singletary is accused of stabbing was transported to an area hospital for life-threatening injuries at the time. 8News has asked the school division about that student’s condition, to which they responded they cannot share information about a student’s health.
Singletary was originally facing two charges including malicious assault and stabbing. The stabbing charge was dropped on May 19.
