Trial dates set for man accused in deadly Richmond jail shooting, malicious wounding at store

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The trial dates for a Richmond man accused in two shootings that took place just over 24 hours apart -- one of which was deadly -- have been set. In mid-2025, 28-year-old Naim Crews, Jr. of Richmond will face two jury trials in connection to a Nov. 4 deadly shooting at the Richmond City Justice Center and a Nov. 3 malicious wounding of a convenience store employee. At about 11:38 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, the Richmond Police Department received a report from an employee at a convenience store in the 1400 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike. Said employee said a man had entered the store, demanded money and started shooting. The employee is said to have fired shots back at the man. While the employee was hurt, the suspect was not, according to police. Their injuries were considered life-threatening and they were taken to a local hospital for treatment. According to police, the detective went to investigate and found 34-year-old Timothy Ward of Henrico County on the ground with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene. Crews was arrested later that same day in connection to the convenience store shooting. Police initially reported that he was charged with attempted murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. According to court records at the time of reporting, his charges include felony malicious wounding, attempted robbery with a firearm and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Later, the department identified Crews as a potential suspect in Ward's murder. He was then charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Crews' two-day trial for the convenience store shooting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on May 8, 2025. His three-day trial for Ward's murder at the Richmond City Justice Center is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on June 10, 2025. Both will take place in the Richmond City Circuit Court.
