Two temporary traffic signals begin operation at New Kent intersection
NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two temporary traffic signals began to operate at a New Kent County intersection off Interstate 64.
According to a release shared by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the temporary traffic signals began operating at the intersection of Emmaus Church Road and I-64, as part of the I-64 Gap Segment A Widening project in the county.
VDOT's contractor, Shirley Contracting Company, will replace the bridge superstructure on Emmaus Church Road over I-64. As a result, two new temporary traffic signals were installed at the I-64 and Emmaus Church Road eastbound and westbound intersections in order to accommodate the new multi-phased bridge replacement project.
"The coordinated signals will allow for continuous bidirectional single-lane traffic across the bridge," the department said.
The new traffic pattern will apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week. VDOT said there may be increased travel times when driving through the work zone.
The project is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
This is not the only notable change in how drivers should travel in New Kent. On June 30, the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office started automated speed enforcement in work zones on I-64 to increase safety for construction workers and other drivers.
