‘Unmitigated danger to the community’: Suspect denied bond in deadly jail parking lot shooting

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 28-year-old man charged with murder in connection to a deadly jail parking lot shooting was denied bond on Thursday. A prosecutor from the Commonwealth Attorney's Office confirmed to 8News that a judge denied bond to 28-year-old Naim Crews, Jr. on Thursday morning. Crews, of Richmond, was charged with murder in connection to a deadly shooting in the Richmond Justice Center's parking lot. The prosecutor told 8News that the judge considered Crews to be an "unmitigated danger to the community." The shooting took place around noon on Nov. 4. A Richmond Police Department detective was in the parking lot of the Richmond Justice Center when he heard a gunshot nearby and went to investigate. According to police, the detective found 34-year-old Timothy Ward, of Henrico, down and unresponsive with a gunshot wound in the parking lot near the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Crews was arrested by police later that day in the area of Fairmount. He has also been identified by police as a person of interest in a different shooting that took place on Mechanicsville Turnpike in November. According to court records, Crews' next court appearance will be for a status hearing at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20.
