Varina High School held the 5th annual “Gloves over Gloves” boxing event aimed at gun violence prevention

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The fifth annual "Guns over Guns" boxing match was held Saturday, Aug 2, at Varina High School aimed at bringing awareness around the importance of youth gun violence prevention.
The community event was held from noon to 4 p.m. and was hosted by non-profit organization, "In My Corner" and the Varina High School Athletics Department.

According to the release, firearms are the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States.
My Corner Founder Elwood Patterson stated, "Youth gun violence is an epidemic in our communities."
Patterson added that, "We’re helping youth find healthy coping skills. Gloves Over Guns gives youth an opportunity to learn conflict resolution inside the ring. We hope you’ll come out to see some exciting boxing at the event."
