VCU says there’s enough dorm space for incoming freshman despite past challenges

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Move-in day at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for most of the incoming freshman class began Friday, August 15. This class is on track to be the second largest in university history with more than 4,500 students enrolled.

College move-in day marks the start of a new chapter for incoming freshmen and a bittersweet day for the loved ones dropping them off. A dozen parents told 8News they were impressed with what a well-oiled machine the process was.

“The empty nest is happening," Bryan Dawson said. "It’s really emotional."

From Arlington, Dawson dropped off his son Vajk, who plans to study history.

“We’re so proud," Dawson said. "We’re so excited for him. At the same time, we’re gonna miss the hell out of him.”

With student volunteers at every glance, Dawson was one of the parents impressed with how smooth things went.

“I’m really surprised given this is an urban environment how well-oiled this is," he said. "The vibe, the positive energy we see at VCU is really kind of, like, surprising.”

But move-in day hasn’t always been so smooth for everyone. We reported in 2023 that 80 students had to live in The Graduate Hotel for the entire school year because of a lack of space.

Despite having one of the biggest freshman classes this year, VCU officials told 8News that they have enough dorm space for everyone and are building a new 14-floor dorm on West Grace Street.

“I think the joy and the excitement is what we’re feeling right now," Dawson said.

So as Dawson leaves his son in his dorm, he can rest assured Arlington isn’t too far from the River City.

“We’ll be down here a lot,” he said.

Move-in day continues on Saturday, August 16, so plan accordingly for heavy traffic and road closures around the campus.

Classes begin Tuesday, August 19.
