VCU will not play at new CarMax Park, Squirrels say

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Baseball will not join the Richmond Flying Squirrels at their new home, according to a Squirrels spokesperson.

VCU Baseball has historically gone to bat at the Diamond, the Squirrels' former home. However, Richmond Flying Squirrels spokesperson Ben Sosenko said that the university baseball team will not be coming with the Squirrels to the new CarMax Park, which is less than 90 days from opening.

According to Sosenko, this wasn't always the plan.

"From the start, we’ve acted in good faith as a community partner," Sosenko told 8News in a statement. "That’s why we reached an agreement with VCU and the City to host VCU baseball, even though it was not in the Squirrels’ financial interest, nor ideal for the maintenance and condition of a professional field. We also agreed to participate in a press conference to celebrate it, despite knowing that this day may come. All sides even signed an agreement publicly at the event that clearly says terms were reached."

Sosenko said that these discussions have since ended.

"[We] have accepted that VCU will not be joining us at CarMax Park," he said. "Our focus now is simple and singular: opening the ballpark in less than 90 days and delivering a long-awaited, defining moment for the City of Richmond and its fans."

8News reached out to VCU for a statement and was told the university "has no comment on the situation regarding CarMax Park."

Construction on CarMax Park is over 80% finished, Sosenko said. The Squirrels will host their 2026 season opener at the brand-new stadium on April 7.
