VDOT invites feedback on proposed Bryan Park interchange projects, some raise concerns
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The daily commute for some Richmonders could look different in the future. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is proposing several projects near the Bryan Park interchange, intending to clear congestion.
VDOT is inviting Richmond residents to share their thoughts on the plans via a survey. However, some already have mixed reviews.
The study shows concerns about congestion, safety and reliability where Interstates 95, 64 and 195 meet. One relatively inexpensive suggestion from VDOT includes building a roundabout on Arthur Ashe Boulevard between the area of The Diamond and Westwood Avenue.
Another proposal involves changes to I-95. VDOT suggests widening the I-64/I-195 to I-95 northbound on-ramp to two lanes and widening the northbound traffic one more lane under the Hermitage Road bridge. This change would likely mean the exit to get on Hermitage Road or Lakeside Avenue would cease to exist and drivers would have to head to the Brook Road/U.S. Route 1 exit to get around.
If VDOT heads in that direction, longtime Lakeside resident Hunter Williams says the decision will create an inconvenience for drivers.
"A lot of people come through here — not just the residents — and, my God, I'd hate to think [what] it would do to all the thriving small businesses we have here, because they're a lot of up and coming, just starting 'Mom and Pop' -- as you would say -- businesses and that's going to devastate them," Williams said.
There's still time to make your voice heard on the survey. VDOT is accepting survey responses on its website until Friday, Aug. 8.
