Virginia celebrates U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary at the Virginia War Memorial
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Monday marked the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy -- here's how the Central Virginia area celebrated.
The celebration was hosted by VA250, in the E. Bruce Heilman Amphitheater at the Virginia War Memorial on Monday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m.
The event was free for attendees and also featured remarks from Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates and Navy veteran, Don Scott, military honors and ceremonies recognizing the Navy's legacy of service.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin also made an appearance at the event alongside Scott and other military personnel.
The U.S. Navy was first established on Oct. 13, 1775 as a way to curb British sea control and when first formed consisted of just two armed vessels, according to the United States Navy.
