Virginia certifies 2025 General Election results

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia’s State Board of Elections has certified the results of the 2025 General Election.

On Monday, Dec. 1, the Virginia Department of Elections announced on social media that the votes for the November General Election were certified.

After each election, votes are double-checked by each locality and certified by local electoral boards.

Then, the Virginia Department of Elections checks the vote counts again before the results are certified by the State Board of Elections.

Former U.S. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D) was chosen by voters to be the next governor of Virginia. She will be the first-ever woman to serve as governor of the state.

Voters chose current Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D) to be the next lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth. She will be the first Muslim woman to serve in the position.

Former delegate Jay Jones (D) was selected by voters as the next attorney general, becoming Virginia's first Black attorney general.
