Virginia Commonwealth Games coming to Richmond after 10 years in Lynchburg

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Commonwealth Games are coming to Richmond after 10 years of taking place in Lynchburg.

On Thursday, July 10, Virginia Amateur Sports (VAS) announced that it has signed a 3-year host community agreement to bring the Virginia Commonwealth Games to the Richmond region starting in 2026, according to a press release.

The Virginia Commonwealth Games, modeled after the Olympics, welcome any and all athletes -- regardless of age, skill or ability. This sporting event -- which includes over 30 different types of sports to participate in -- aims to bring people together, foster good sportsmanship and promote healthy living.

More than 310,000 athletes have participated in the Games' 36 years of operations, per VAS.

In its first two decades, the Virginia Commonwealth Games were held in Roanoke. Then, for the last 10 years, it's been held in Lynchburg -- but that all changes following this announcement.

“We’re thrilled to welcome The Commonwealth Games to the Richmond region,” said Jerrine Lee, vice president of sales at Richmond Regional Tourism, in the release. “This hallmark event celebrates the power of sports and teamwork, values that are central to our local community. We cannot wait to cheer on the thousands of talented athletes as they compete at facilities and fields throughout the region.”

VAS clarified that several events currently offered in the Roanoke Valley -- including things like triathlons, golf tournaments and Special Olympics events -- will not be relocated.

"Liberty University has been an ardent supporter of the Games and has been the title sponsor since 2016," VAS said in the release. "Virginia Amateur Sports is grateful for the 10 years of partnership with the City of Lynchburg and Liberty University, and knows the Games are as strong as they are today due to the partnerships with the Lynchburg community."
