Virginia dentists share tips to prevent cavities from Halloween candy
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Prepared to go trick-or-treating this Halloween season? Virginia dentists shared tips to protect your oral health from candy-induced cavities.
The Virginia Dental Association (VDA) warned trick-or-treaters on Wednesday, Oct. 22, that eating too much candy can often lead to cavity concerns.
When enjoying Halloween candy, follow these tips from the VDA:
- Brush your teeth or swish your mouth with water after a treat.
- Do not consume candy throughout the day — save it for a treat after a meal.
- Avoid sticky or sour candies.
- Look for dark chocolates that are low in sugar.
- Don't keep a stash of candy on hand — have your family pick their favorites and donate the rest.
The VDA urged parents and kids to schedule preventative dental care appointments as the holidays approach. However, due to a statewide shortage of dental hygienists, appointments can be more than six months out.
