Virginia DMV extends expiration date for driver’s licenses expiring over weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will extend its expiration date for driver's licenses set to expire over the weekend ahead of the ice and snow storm headed toward the Commonwealth.

The afternoon of Friday, Jan. 23, the DMV said that all Virginia driver’s licenses or ID cards expiring January 24, 2026, through January 31, 2026, will have their expiration date automatically extended by 30 calendar days.

"We want our customers to be able to concentrate on staying safe and warm, and staying off the roads," the DMV wrote in a social post.

According to the department, all affected credentials will automatically reflect the revised expiration date when scanned by law enforcement or other authorized entities.
