Virginia National Guard deploys troops for winter weather response
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Troops with the Virginia National Guard are once again preparing for the winter weather across various parts of Virginia this weekend.
The Virginia National Guard said on Jan. 31 that soldiers and airmen have been placed across Virginia, primarily in the Eastern Shore and Hampton Roads area, ahead of the upcoming snowstorm that is set to hit some parts of Virginia.
There are around 125 Virginia National Guard members on duty, which includes response teams, command and control, administrative and logistics resources and additional supporting elements. Members of the Virginia Defense Force will also be assisting with operations, according to the release.
Starting on Jan. 31, crews with the National Guard will communicate with emergency managers for each location to carry out any mission and provide additional assistance. There will be multiple troops available to help clear roads and power lines, as well as to help move products and supplies.
Troops will be stationed with heavy-duty trucks that are able to move through deep snow and high water. In addition to Black Hawk helicopters with the ability to hoist individuals for any rescue needed.
“For the second time in as many weeks, our Soldiers and Airmen are ready to help their communities as heavy snow is forecasted for parts of Virginia,” said Todd H. Hubbard, Virginia National Guard Director of the Joint Staff. “Our personnel have once again responded quickly and safely, and stand ready to support emergency response operations as needed and help keep Virginians safe.”
During the weekend of Jan. 24 to Jan. 27, over 300 soldiers, airmen and Virginia Defense Force members responded to the winter storm that raged across Virginia.
This included delivering supplies for the community in Marion, Va., where the National Guard handed out cases of water and ready-to-eat meals for its residents.
The Virginia National Guard is not able to respond to direct requests for support, instead requests are submitted through the Virginia Emergency Support Team.
