Virginia officials highlight UV Protection Month
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is raising awareness for sun safety as part of Ultraviolet (UV) Protection Month this July.
"UV rays can cause cancer, known as melanoma," a page on VDH's website reads. "Melanoma of the skin is the 6th most common cancer in Virginia."
VDH highlights the following suggestions to stay safe in the sun:
- Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher
- Find shade during the hottest parts of the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
- Wear clothing to cover your skin
The Cancer Action Coalition of Virginia has also partnered with VDH as part of this awareness campaign. More resources from the coalition are available on the website.
