Virginia sets date for 2026 Statewide Tornado Drill

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- State officials have set the date for Virginia's next annual tornado drill, which will take place in early March.

Virginia's 2026 Statewide Tornado Drill will take place at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM).

"This is a great opportunity for schools, businesses, agencies and families to practice tornado safety plans and review emergency procedures," VDEM said.

Tornadoes are an extremely dangerous weather phenomenon that can appear suddenly and with little to no warning. Preparing yourself and your family ahead of time means you can act quickly if a tornado appears in your area, potentially saving lives.

"When it comes to tornadoes, there's no such thing as 'tornado season,'" VDEM said. "Tornadoes can strike anywhere, anytime, and you need to know the drill."
