Virginians can now use digital driver’s licenses through Mobile ID app

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginians can now use digital driver's licenses on their phones at more than 250 airports in the country — including Richmond International Airport (RIC) — courtesy of the Virginia Mobile ID app.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that it has launched the Virginia Mobile ID app, permitting the use of Virginia-issued digital IDs at security checkpoints in many airports, DMV customer service centers and select Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Authority stores.

To obtain a digital ID, you must have a valid Virginia driver's license or ID card.

Per the DMV, state troopers and certain local law enforcement agencies — including Chesterfield County Police Department and Hanover County Sheriff's Office — will also accept digital IDs as a form of identification.

However, the DMV urges Virginians to continue carrying their physical ID card as a backup, especially when driving on the road.

Per the release, the Mobile ID app can help residents confirm they're over 21 years old without having to disclose additional personal information.

“Most of us rely heavily on our phones, which is why Virginians should have access to a safe, secure form of mobile identification on the devices they use all the time,” said Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller, III in the release. “The Virginia Mobile ID option protects your identity and privacy in the digital age, keeping you in control of what information you share.”

According to the DMV, Virginia Mobile ID is currently accepted at six airports in the state:

  • Reagan Washington National (DCA)
  • Washington-Dulles (IAD)
  • Richmond (RIC)
  • Norfolk (ORF)
  • Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF)
  • Roanoke (ROA)

The DMV said it's "actively working to expand Virginia Mobile ID acceptance across the Commonwealth," including at restaurants, retailers and law enforcement agencies.
