VSU announces plans for 454-bed residence hall for student growth
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State University (VSU) has announced its plans of expanding on-campus housing for students with a new state-of-the-art resident hall.
VSU will soon break ground on a new 454-bed resident hall to support the new student enrollment growth. According to the university the 11,000 square foot building will be opened and added to VSU's housing portfolio in Spring 2026.

With the university being ranked amongst the most affordable and accessible four-year colleges in the state, the student enrollment numbers have previously prompted VSU to coordinate temporary housing solutions -- like off-campus apartments, partnerships with hotels, as well as shared housing with the local community college.
VSU says the new resident hall will feature single and double suites, a multipurpose room, study lounges and student parking.
“Investing in our students is always one of our top priorities,” said Dr. Alexis Brooks-Walter, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “This project is more than just a new residence hall—it’s a statement of our commitment to serving our student population and our ongoing pursuit of GREATER at VSU.”
In addition, the residence hall will provide long-term solutions for on-campus housing stability so students can enjoy the residential life experiences and the benefits of VSU.
The groundbreaking for the new residence hall will be set for later this month.
