VUU alumnus designs Nike Yardrunners inspired by university
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Through Nike's Yardrunners initiative, an alumnus of Virginia Union University (VUU) has designed Nike Air Force Ones inspired by the university. Nike established its Yardrunners in 2020 "to celebrate the rich heritage, history and contributions of HBCUs [Historically Black Colleges and Universities] and their alumni on global sport and culture," according to an Instagram post from the company. The collaboration itself was founded by a Nike HBCU alumni. "Each year, the initiative serves as an opportunity for teams at Nike to partner with HBCU trailblazers to create inspirational storytelling and philanthropy with and for the community," Nike said. One of this year's Yardrunners is the "VUU Panthers," designed by fashion stylist and VUU alumnus Dex Rob. The "VUU Panthers," Nike Yardrunners designed by Virginia Union University alumnus Dex Rob. It also features custom elements designed by Rob "that pay homage to the university's legacy and spirit." “This collaboration is about more than fashion — it's about representing where I come from,” Rob said in the DTLR press release. “VUU shaped me into the person I am today, and being able to work with Nike on a project that highlights that experience is surreal. I want everyone who wears this sneaker to feel that same Panther pride.” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney tours Diamond District construction site Notably, the VUU Panthers are being released as the university celebrates its 160th anniversary.
