WATCH: Lightning strikes Chesterfield home, sparking fire in attic

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Four Chesterfield County residents are without a home after lightning struck Tuesday afternoon, sparking a fire in their attic.

Just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, firefighters with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS were called to a home in the 12400 block of Ivytree Terrace for a report of a structure fire.

When they arrived, crews found a fire burning in the attic of a two-story house.

Video captured by an 8News viewer shows heavy fire pouring from the roof of the home.

Thankfully, no one was hurt -- however, the fire's damage displaced four residents.

Firefighters were also able to rescue two cats and two chickens from the home, none of which were injured.

The fire was the result of lightning striking the home, per officials.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect across much of Central Virginia through 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings have also been issued for various localities.

As of the time of reporting, crews remain at the scene. Officials said they will likely remain there into late Tuesday evening.
