What do VA lawmakers want to hear from President Trump in his joint address to Congress?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With President Donald Trump set to deliver a joint address to Congress on Tuesday, Virginia lawmakers have differing opinions on what they want to hear from the president.

“The President is going to lay out what his vision is in the months to come. He’ll probably talk a little bit about what’s been done, but that there is more left to do,” said Republican Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01).

“I’m expecting to hear the President lay out his priorities. I’m hoping that those priorities will be putting the American people over billionaires and politics,” said Democratic Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04).

Republican Congressman John McGuire (VA-05) said he wants to hear more from President Trump on his administration’s efforts to keep Americans safe.

“The last four years of America, Americans were not safe, Americans were dying at home and abroad,” McGuire said. “I would like to go back to what Ronald Reagan talked about, American expansion, which I hear President Trump talk about, peace through strength.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine (VA), who is bringing Jason King -- a recently fired federal worker from Fairfax County -- to the address, wants President Trump to directly address the thousands of federal workers his administration has fired, which Kaine said disproportionately impacts veterans who have recently transitioned to civilian life.

“When they undertake this mass firing campaign it is a war on veterans, and I hope that the President will address those who have been fired, particularly a message of, veterans we are bringing you back, we should never have laid you off to begin with. I would love to hear that,” Kaine said.

President Trump's speech will begin at 9 PM and air on 8News.
