Who are the candidates vying for the Richmond Public School board Sixth District seat?
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- After Richmond City School Board member Shonda Harris-Muhammed announced her resignation in early December 2025, Richmond Public Schools (RPS) has announced the five applicants vying to fill her vacant Sixth District seat.
Harris-Muhammed announced her resignation on Dec. 2, 2025, saying that she would be serving a school division in the Commonwealth as CEO and acting superintendent.
She also announced she would be joining Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi’s transition team.
On Monday, Jan. 12, Richmond Public Schools (RPS) announced the following five candidates for her seat:
- Katina Harris with the Virginia Education Association
- Anne Holton, wife of State Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) and former Secretary of Education of Virginia
- Jacqueline McDonough, the Director of Training at VCU-RRTC
- Richard Walker, who ran for delegate in 2023
- Victor McKenzie, Jr., the CEO of Virginia Health Catalyst
Candidates will be interviewed publicly by the school board on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
The board will then vote on the appointment at its regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, Feb. 2.
